Heartbreaking Update on UPS Incident: Fatalities Increases to 13

The number of fatalities from the freight aircraft which burst into flames and plummeted has now risen to 13, per recent reports.

Official's Statement

Traveling to the Teamsters’ candlelight gathering, I was informed of a thirteenth victim that lost their life as a result of the aircraft crash,” stated the local official in a public communication. “My prayers is with the families, associates and co-workers of all who were lost in this recently occurred tragedy. We will get through this collectively.”

Victims Named

A release from the carrier named the flight crew on board the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as Pilot Richard Wartenberg, Co-pilot Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.

“Our hearts are extended to each staff member who has been impacted and everyone in our Louisville community – supporting you and ensuring you obtain the care and assistance you need is our priority,” the company’s message stated.

Inquiry Updates

Federal officials revealed that the UPS cargo plane’s wing ignited and an engine fell off just after liftoff from the aviation hub, resulting in the plane to fall and erupt into a blaze.

The NTSB has said it is investigating the aircraft’s maintenance history, that was in the state for fixes several weeks prior to the crash.

Aircraft information revealed the plane was on the runway in San Antonio, Texas from 3 September to 18 October.

“We are knowledgeable that this jet was present in the facility,” stated an investigator on Thursday, not giving a specific date range. “We will examine each aspect of service that was performed, from the repair time, straight to the time of the flight.”

Recovery of Critical Items

The cockpit voice recorder and data recorder were found, and the power plant was discovered on the tarmac.

The units – referred to as black boxes – were designed to survive crash impacts and intense temperatures from blazes, and they seemed to be undamaged when discovered amid the wreckage. Investigators plan on analyzing information from the devices.

The plane’s last data recordings indicated an height of that level and a rate of that speed prior to the crash.

Maintenance History

Based on FAA documents from 18 September, a fracture on a component inside the fuel container needed maintenance.

Singapore-based ST Engineering, which stated it supplies aircraft servicing for UPS’s jet and runs a service location in that city, chose not to comment, but stated it would work closely when investigators reached out it.

Operations Continue

Meanwhile, the facility operations restarted Wednesday night with its overnight or evening operation, representative the company official said. The three runways at the airport were also open again.

The distribution hub in Louisville is the firm’s most significant. The hub employs in excess of a large number of workers in the locality, handles numerous aircraft per day and sorts more than four hundred thousand parcels each hour.

Local Response

A memorial was conducted on the night of that date by the regional Teamsters Union, which supports workers at the aviation hub, the organization’s largest air cargo hub.

The union chapter, which stands for employees, commenced the memorial with a moment of silence at the evening hour, the rough moment of the incident before.

“This tragedy was so unexpected, so unexpected,” the mayor told the crowd of two hundred. “No one had a opportunity to say goodbye to each of those who we have mourned.”
