Government Official States Ministry of Defence Looking at Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Personnel Advised to Refrain from Secret Talk in Cars.

An defence minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made vehicles, while personnel have been advised to refrain from talking about classified information in all vehicles.

Security Advice for Defence Staff

In a recently aired appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about classified information while travelling in China-made vehicles.

He said that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that security is a issue in all modern vehicles.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any car, because of the increasing threats of surveillance that exist in all automobile, to only have those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

This announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and cause disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

The wider security situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and caution in all areas of official operations, from vehicle usage to communication habits.
